As the world prepared itself for New Year’s Celebrations on 31st December 2024, celebrations of a different kind were taking place at the new Community Coffee Roastery in Mukli, Solukhumbu, as the first ever roast of local beans took place within its walls. This milestone marked the next significant step on the road to commercial success and keeping a larger share of the income from coffee within the communities that farm it.
There is still a little way to go but with further training of the three staff members planned for early 2025, orders for roasted beans being received from a coffee shop in Kathmandu, and the harvesting of the 2024/25 coffee crop well underway, ready to be purchased by the coffee cooperative things are looking very exciting for the coming months.
None of this would’ve been possible without the incredible support from our crowdfunder last year, along with support from EcoHimal and Thulung-Dudhkoshi Local Government. We will continue to provide updates via The Glacier Trust website and are hoping to have Solukhumbu-roasted coffee available to purchase through our website shop in the very near future.
